Navigating Through Change

Change brings both pain and possibility.

My husband and I have just returned after a series of trips, first to Missouri and then to Montreal, Canada. In our Southern California residence, the opportunity to witness the beautiful transformation of autumn leaves is rare, making this trip a unique chance to appreciate the changing seasons.

Change can be challenging, as it requires us to face uncomfortable situations in life. You may find yourself in a situation where God is calling you into a new season, or you may have naturally or unexpectedly entered one. This season of change could involve contemplating a career move, relocating to a new home, entering a new vocation, expanding your family, or facing unexpected life circumstances. These changes may require significant adjustments. However, change is also an invitation to something new, potentially leading us to experiences that surpass our expectations.

God desires that we bear fruit regardless of the season in which we find ourselves. He is our security and anchor through any change and uncertainty. When we are connected to God who gives life, we can bear fruit even in the barrenness of winter. Here are a few simple steps to navigate through a season of transition:

a simple strategy

  1. Acknowledge where you are.

Change is not easy. It's important to acknowledge your experience and embrace your own pace in adapting to your new situation.

  2. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

It is easy to get caught up in the mess and pain that transition may bring. Stay near Jesus through the storm; He knows how to rest through it.

  3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Physical wellness is just as essential to spiritual wellness. The body and spirit are one and not separate.

  4. Develop a plan but be flexible.

It is good to have a transition plan and be open to adjusting it as needed.

  5. Find opportunities for growth.

Use the transition as an opportunity to learn new skills, gain experience, and grow as an individual.

  6. Seek support throughout the transition.

“Friendship is the source of the greatest pleasures, and without friends even the most agreeable pursuits become tedious.” - St. Thomas Aquinas

  7. Celebrate your victories.

Celebrate God’s goodness, and reward yourself for both small and large achievements. This gives you meaning and motivation to continue on to the next step.

Change may bring pain, but there will always be new possibilities. The most important thing to do is to take even one little step at a time. Soon enough, you will discover God’s perfect timing.

“There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.”

Eccelesiastes 3:1
