How to Have a Simple Life
A simple life sounds like it should be simple right? It is easy once you get there, but it is definitely not easy to get to.
Have you seen The Biggest Little Farm? A friend of mine recommended watching the documentary and I absolutely loved it so now I am sharing it with you. If you are okay with a few spoilers, feel free to continue reading. Otherwise, I encourage you to watch it with a loved one and come back later.
The Biggest Little Farm is about a young married couple with a dream of having a simple farm, using traditional farming methods and the natural ecosystem of the earth. The documentary goes through their journey reviving a fallow farm and all the joys and challenges that come with it.
When they began to work on the land, the dirt had no life within it. They had the help of an expert traditional farmer to teach them what was required to do this so-called simple way of farming. It requires the diversity of plants, animals, and microorganisms working together in harmony.
Everytime they encountered a new problem (of which there were many), they had to step back, observe and see what opportunities they had to create equilibrium. As they learned and grew a better understanding of how everything was contributing to the farm, the simpler things became. It was a “patient dance… which can’t be forced”. Their farming not only became simple, but they produced the tastiest food and their harvest was plentiful.
Having a simpler life is going to require lots of change to your current one. It is slow interior tilling of your soul, learning about how you are designed and how you can live in harmony with the things around you. When you find resistance, that means there is an opportunity to be strengthened. Humans are diverse in gifts. We need to find support from others in the areas we are weak so we can spend our time and energy on where we are strong and what brings us to life.
Most importantly, a simple life starts with surrender to God. We must let go and entrust everything to Him, so that we give Him power to transform it into something beautiful. When we remain connected to the Creator of the Universe, we will see as He sees, moves as He moves, and life will naturally become simpler.
