A Year of Victory

“Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

Romans 5:1-5

At the beginning of each year, I have a tradition of praying about God’s theme or word for the year. As I seek God's guidance for 2024, the word resonating within my heart is “Victory.”

Last year's word was “Trust,” and I sensed a connection. It was significant as I took a considerable risk in 2022, leaving my career to focus on coaching full-time. I also underwent various challenges and emerged with greater inner and physical healing.

This year, I want to declare victory over battles faced in the past, today, and the future. There were times in the past when I felt defeated. How can you see victory when you feel defeated? It takes courage to continue. For me, courage comes from hope and belief in God’s enduring goodness and love for me. I have found that my willingness and perseverance in facing trials, instead of running away from them, have brought me new strength and wisdom, which, to me, is a win.

I recall a story from Brene Brown's documentary “The Call to Courage.” Her daughter participated in a challenging swim meet and, despite tears and a rough performance, said, “I won because I was brave.” What humility and strength to find victory in bravery.

Shifting to a mindset of victory requires the willingness to enter the battlefield, which is not easy. However, in this struggle, we have the opportunity to build character, strengthen our abilities, and grow in virtue. We collect data, refine strategies, and improve our thought processes. When we discover how to navigate difficulties, we are equipped with knowledge and tools to help others emerge as victors. Who would ever know how to help others get through their struggles unless they have experienced it themselves? Therefore, we can trust Christ in all things because He willingly entered our humanity, embraced the cross even unto death, and emerged with new life.

Let us not fear what may come our way. God will bless us. Going through vulnerable human experiences is necessary, and God equips us with exactly what we need. “For God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). As long as we abide in Christ, there is victory.
